Shanghai Moon by S.J. Rozan August 2010

Rozan has long been a favorite of mine. Lydia is hired to track down a cache of European jewelry dating back to World War II, including one of the world's most sought after and expensive jewels--the Shanghai Moon. The cache was recently unearthed in Shanghai, one of the few places providing a safe haven to Jewish refugees during that war. And though it may be sparkling, it's filled with more murder, intrigue and romance than jade. $24.95

The Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone
May 2009

This was a pleasant diversion from all the mystery and non fiction I usually read. But they don't make me cry at the end--this did. $15.99

The Help by Kathryn Stockett February 2009

Having lived through this period, it was not the shock to me that it was to some. But I loved the book and it brought back a lot of memories of the struggle during the 60s. It's hard for me to really know if the tone was accurate for the maids but it certainly seemed so. Our own live-in maid was white-and had to be because of the sundown laws in my hometown. My guess is that a lot of you won't know what those are, thank goodness. Now if only we didn't have to wait until February to share it with our customers... $24.95

Bone by Bone by Carol O'Connell January 2009

Even though I miss Mallory, this is a great hard-boiled addition to the mystery section.

The Brass Verdict by Michael Connelly October 2008

Connelly has brought back the character from The Lincoln Lawyer and added Bosch to the mix. This one lives up to Connelly's reputation and leaves us with a cliffhanger I hope will be addressed next year.

The Given Day by Dennis Lehane October 2008

Although this historical novel is beautifully written, beware in recommending it to Lehane fans without explaining that it is nothing like his previous books--except in the quality of writing.

Man in the Dark by Paul Auster August 2008

** spoiler alert ** Let's face it, Paul Auster either has a very strange mind or he's on some good drugs. This book jumps back and forth between an elderly man and the characters in his fantasy. I just keep wondering what the conversations are like around the dinner table between Paul and Siri.

The Sorrows of an American: A Novel April 2008
by Siri Hustvedt

An interesting interplay between some oft-time strange and troubled characters. While not as strange as her husband, Paul Auster-Siri, can be a little bit out there, but then so am I.

Alice: Alice Roosevelt Longworth, from White House Princess to Washington Power Broker
by Stacy A. Cordery November 2007

I loved this book. Not only was she very much her own woman, she at times had more influence in Washington that the President.

Little Heathens: Hard Times and High Spirits
on an Iowa Farm During the Great Depression

by Mildred Armstrong May 2007

Having grown up in a tiny town across the Mississippi from Iowa, this book brought back memories of my childhood. It also made me wonder if I could have trained the racoons in my attic instead of calling the animal guy last fall. This should be fun even for someone with a city background. $14
