What the Gospels Meant by Garry Wills February 2008

"The third and most enlightening book of Wills’ trilogy is a must read for anyone interested in the New Testament gospels.  At once lucid and inviting, Wills
establishes the historical contexts of each gospel to reveal the very specific readings and reasons behind them.  What we end up with is a magnificent guide to the gospels, their contexts, and to their authors.

This book, as well as his Head and Heart: American Christianities won Wills the Tribune’s Heartland Prize for Nonfiction, 2008."

Fear Up Harsh by Tony Lagouranis June 2007

"The first thing Lagouranis, an Army translator and interrogator, was told after arriving in Iraq was that “nothing happened here.”  He was posted at Abu Ghraib, the notorious Iraqi prison made famous internationally when the prisoner abuse scandal broke.  At all times troubled by his conscience, Lagouranis details the time he spent in Iraq interrogating prisoners—some guilty, many, he’s convinced, not—using approved “Fear Up Harsh” methods he believes often amounted to torture.  Lagouranis admits he is ashamed of some of the things he did in Iraq, and he teaches us that often in war it’s far easier to ignore our conscience than is imaginable.  The great redeeming truth, however, is that we can choose to relisten to it any time.  This book does that work for Lagouranis."

AK-47: The Weapon that Changed the Face of War
by Larry Kahaner October 2006

"This is one of the most engrossing and troubling books I have read in a long time.  Bouncing from continent to continent, Kahaner details the story of the AK-47 assault rifle from its humble Soviet beginnings to its current status as a weapon of revolution, violence, and terror the world over.  This unmistakable weapon is the symbol of armed resistance and violence in our world today.  As such, according to Kahaner, these rifles are the true weapons of mass destruction.

This book is sure to open many eyes about modern conflict everywhere—from Vietnam and Southeast Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa, Afghanistan, the Middle East, South America, and even here in the United States.  This is an overall remarkable book."
