Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell January 2009

“This book is fresh and original, but at the same time lends itself to one of those ‘hybrid labels’ - House meets The Sopranos, with a touch of Mary Roach's books. It's a thriller with footnotes, and one heckuva wild ride.”

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins October 2008

"I just finished this book after hardly being able to put it down for the last 18 hours (only long enough to sleep). In a letter to readers, Suzanne Collins hopes that Katniss, in whose voice the story is told, finds her way into our hearts. She did. I admired her strength, courage, and empathy throughout the story and look forward to book 2."

Testimony by Anita Shreve October 2008

“This book reads a lot like a screenplay with the camera showing rotating perspectives. A camera is also involved in the central controversy that propels the novel - a videotape surfaces portraying sex between an underage girl and two 18-year old and one 19-year-old boy at a private high school. Shreve masterfully tells the story of the ensuing aftermath."

An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination: A Memoir
by Elizabeth McCracken August 2008

“An Exact Replica of a Figment of My Imagination has touched my heart and left me nearly speechless with its beauty. It was such a beautifully heartfelt rendering of an experience I would imagine might be among the very saddest of all those experiences out there in the universe. McCracken is a master at telling a story in very intimate and simple prose, almost like poetry in the way her writing summons emotion, sensory connections, and overall understanding. I loved this book and look forward to helping it find devoted readers who will cherish it too.”

The Heretic's Daughter by Kathleen Kent September 2008

“A rich and viscerally told historical novel set in 1690's colonial America during the Salem Witch Trials, this story feels so real you'll think you're shackled and imprisoned in the subterranean jail alongside the accused witches. The story is told from the perspective of a ten-year-old girl whose family members are under suspicion. I loved this book.”

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson August 2008

“Reading this book is like journeying to an exotic and colorful place, along the way enjoying surprises via trap doors. I definitely can't wait to finish this amazing book.”

The Little Book by Selden Edwards August 2008

“I loved this gem of a novel. It was definitely worth the 30-wait it took for the author, Selden Edwards, to get it published. Drenched in atmosphere, this novel is set mostly in 1897 Vienna when Sigmund Freud, Gustav Mahler, Adolph Hitler, and many more historical figures are stewing about fin de siecle Austria. As with most novels with a time travel element, there are some stunningly coincidental meetings between people from different centuries, but it really works within the intellectual love story in this book, which is the centerpiece of the novel. Hopefully Selden Edwards is working on another book, and we won't have to wait so long this time!”

Tethered: A Novel by Amy MacKinnon August 2008

“I loved the main character in this book - Clara Marsh. Incredibly complex, at once resilient and fragile, she is a wonderfully drawn character I will not soon forget. I loved Tethered!"

My Most Excellent Year by Steve Kluger March 2008

“Steve Kluger's book, Last Days of Summmer, is one of my all-time favorite books. Steve's newest book, My Most Excellent Year, is a great companion to his first. I love it just as much! Both books get at the heart of what it means to be a fiercely loyal friend in good times and bad. Steve just read and signed at Anderson's Bookshop in Naperville and we had a wonderful time!"

The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum January 2008

“The book's main character, Emily, is like the friend you always want to be or wish you had. She's smart, funny, impulsive (usually in a good way), and cares deeply about her family, friends, and about making the world a better place. Not to sound too saccharine though, because Emily isn't without her faults. Buxbaum brings her very soul to life between the covers of this novel. I'm hoping for a sequel.”
